Sidi Bel Abbes Province
Sidi Bel Abbes is an Algerian state located in the heart of the Oran sector in western Algeria. The state capital is located at an altitude of 470 meters above sea level, in the middle of the Maqra Plateau at the foot of the Tsala Mountains to the north and the Dhaia Mountains to the south.
The Beni Hamid tribe, one of the Beni Amer tribes, inhabited the area starting in the 14th century AD. When the French came in 1843 AD, General Boudou became aware of its strategic importance and established a reserve on the banks of the Makra River next to the dome of the righteous saint, Sidi Bel Abbas.
The Banu Amer resisted the occupation in 1845, which led to their retreat and the weakening of their allies after they faced the colonial project with great ferocity. They did not relent until France established a military garrison, which was later transformed into a military city in the current location of the city of Sidi Bel Abbes.
The majority of the residents of the city of Sidi Bel Abbes during the French occupation of Algeria were of Spanish origins, as they lived in neighborhoods such as the Caiason neighborhood, and some of the old neighborhoods still retain their Spanish names.
